Kellers Earn Top Honors at National OYF Congress
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 02/21/2011
Wisconsin's candidates for the National Jaycees Outstanding Young Farmer Award came home as winners this weekend. Ryan and Michelle Keller of Richland Center, who earned the state-wide title last year, were one of the top four national winners during the U.S. Jaycees Awards Congress held in Louisville, Kentucky. Eighteen other producers from around the country competed for the award.
The Kellers are part owners of Junction View Dairy LLC--a 925-cow dairy farm that was formed in 2007 by the Kellers, Ryan's parents and two other neighbors who all merged their operations together. Ryan serves as the farm's herd manager, and says he strives to breed sound cows with an emphasis on type.
The farm has the potential to expand up to 1,500 cows in the future if more land became available for crop production. Currently, the farm is made up of a milking parlor, 540-cow sand-bedded free stall barn, and contains 229 cows in a special needs barn.
Ryan is a third generation OYF winner, with his parents, Gordon and Marsha Keller, earning the award in 1982; as well as his grandparents, Theron and Jenna Keller, in 1959.
The couple is the 15th national winners from Wisconsin in the program's history.
The three other national winners named during the weekend were from New Jersey, Oklahoma and Connecticut. The candidates were judged on the progress in their agricultural career, soil and water conservation practices and contributions to their community, state and nation.
Meanwhile, this year's state OYF winners, Brian & Renee Schaal of Burlington, will also compete for the honor during next year's national competition in Arkansas.
The Outstanding Young Farmers program is the oldest farmer recognition program in America. The award is sponsored by John Deere, the National Association of County Agricultural Agents and the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce.
